Nick Kuchar Art & Design Co.

Artist Nick Kuchar and retail/merchandising veteran Lori Goodgame have opened their first brick-and-mortar shops in Kailua Town, fitting right in to Kailua’s casual beach-town lifestyle!

Known for his charming, vintage-inspired surf and travel art depicting our favorite locations in Hawai‘i, Kuchar’s new shop, located between Fighting Eel and Whole Foods Kailua, is aptly named Nick Kuchar Art & Design Co. It’s an intimate gallery for his full catalog of art where you can find framed original work, limited editions, travel prints and canvas-wrapped giclées as well as merchandise sporting Kuchar’s colorful illustrations, including hats, tote bags, note cards, insulated water bottles and beach towels. Hand-picked vintage items (yes, that adorable seafoam-green television really works) aren’t for sale, but complement the artist’s delightfully mid-century modern aesthetic.

“I love the emotional connections created through my artwork and the ability to connect with our customers about favorite locations in our islands,” Kuchar says. “Without any in-person events in 2020 we realized it was something we really missed. An established location for us helps to tell the story of my artistic process along with creating a fun and safe environment to share those stories with kama‘āina and our island guests.”

Classic Waves Boutique

Just across the street, ocean-inspired Classic Waves Boutique opened in early January next to Lanikai Bath and Body. With its selection of women’s clothing in classic, timeless silhouettes; handmade jewelry; a small capsule of men’s apparel; and a collection of gifts and home accessories, the shop is a dream-come-true for Kailua resident Lori Goodgame who spent 20-plus years working for such companies as Ralph Lauren, Coach and, most recently, Sand People.

While much of her business is devoted to products by local artists and designers, Goodgame also seeks out interesting brands from around the world that complement the boutique’s classic aloha vibes. “I look for unique companies whose products are fun and unexpected and/or that have socially conscious missions,” she says. “Many of our collaborators fall into more than one bucket.”
